Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko talks about their new SMS platform, and Android phone called Solana Saga.
On 24 June, Solana recently launched an “SMS” event to suggest a few ideas about smartphones in New York City. Solana Labs has built a mobile software platform, and the company is also releasing a smartphone.
The company has announced a little about Solana Mobile Stack (SMS) software to provide tools for developing apps, for example, games for mobile devices under the original Android operating system and a decentralized app store. The company also unveiled Saga, a powerful Android smartphone that will be released in early 2023.
Anatoly Yakovenko said that his team has been developing push SMS for about five months, and the hardware development time is a little longer. But the idea of improving Web3 mobile access and functionality has been in his head for many years, especially with his experience as a Qualcomm engineer.
Yakovenko said that it was only through meeting Jason Keats – the founder and “Hooligan Team Leader” at OSOM Products, that his idea came to fruition. Keats was previously head of R&D at Essential, a startup that manufactures its Android phones, and OSOM will do the same: OSOM OV1 announced it would now be rebranded as Solana Saga.
Solana Saga will be an Android phone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, 6.67-inch OLED screen, 12GB RAM, and 512GB internal memory. This phone will be no different from Samsung’s or Google’s high-end phones with the simplicity of an iPhone.
There are more than 3 billion Android phones in the world right now, so why not build a new phone specifically for the Solana ecosystem? Yakovenko said that the device is estimated to sell for $1,000 and would represent the gold standard for a Web3-focused smartphone and fully demonstrate the features of Solana Mobile Stack.
He said that while other Android devices can use the full Solana Mobile Stack or even parts of it, Solana Saga will give users and developers a complete experience with top specs. And Saga doesn’t just mean a secondary device: it’s a powerful smartphone full of Google apps and services, like most other popular Android devices.
Besides, there is no such thing as other Android devices that will apply Solana Mobile Stack. It’s an open-source platform that aims to be widely adopted, so the company hopes to see every significant manufacturer integrate it. However, phone manufacturers will need to make an effort to support this crypto software – which is relatively appropriate and less controversial.
“If we start to succeed, then I think the dominoes will start to decline in cryptocurrency adoption in both companies,” he said when asked about SMS on Samsung and Google devices.
When asked about iPhone and the IOS operating system, Yakovenko noted that Apple’s recent WWDC 2022 showcased tools unrelated to cryptocurrencies. SMS Mobile Wallet Adapter feature is not limited to Android and can work with other mobile and PC platforms. Still, Apple’s limited ecosystem can limit the smooth running of Saga mobile apps on iOS devices.
Whether Solana Labs can get Apple or even leading Android manufacturers involved by SMS, Yakovenko described it as an important mission to bring the world into cryptocurrencies.
