Members of the ENS DAO community will currently only see an empty page with a green domain expiration notification banner at the top when they visit the organization’s eth.link website.
This is due to the fact that the only individual with the power to renew the domain, Virgil Griffith, is currently incarcerated for assisting North Koreans in using cryptocurrency to evade sanctions and is unable to renew the name from a prison environment. Eth.link expired on July 26 and is scheduled to return to a domain registry on September 5 where it will be available for acquisition by anyone who is able to take it, according to a notice domain registrar GoDaddy posted on its website late Friday.
ENS A Web3 equivalent of a domain name service provider, the Ethereum Name Service protocol is governed by the DAO, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). The ENS protocol is responsible for the plethora of.eth domain names that have appeared across the Ethereum ecosystem. Users have purchased.eth names to acquire their own domain names. Once ENS identities are linked to wallet addresses, users can send and receive cryptocurrency more easily (instead of having to type out a long, complex Ethereum address).
According to Khori Whittaker, the Executive Director of ENS:
“Virgil Griffith, who was working at the Ethereum Foundation when ENS launched, was an early contributor to the ENS protocol. Because ENS is a permissionless protocol, anyone can build dApps on top of it, which is the case for Virgil’s involvement with eth.link. He purchased the domain and built an application that resolves ENS domains.”
The eth.link website served as the DAO’s sole source of access to data on all ENS names.
A message from the ENS DAO Twitter account claims that EasyDNS CEO Mark Jeftovic had previously agreed to renew the domain address for an additional year, but that the domain registrar abruptly and “without notice” opted not to honor the agreement.
Over the past year, ENS’s growth has increased; on August 17, 2 million domain names were registered. The first million names were registered by ENS in 5 years, whereas the second million names were added in about 3.5 months.
