The Belarusian Cyber Partisans are a gang of hacktivists seeking to sell a nonfungible token (NFT) with supposed passport information for Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko.
According to the Belarusian Cyber Partisans, the move is part of a grassroots funding effort to combat “bloody regimes in Minsk and Moscow.”
The members claim to have hacked into a government database containing every Belarusian citizen’s passport information, allowing them to launch an NFT collection dubbed Belarisuan Passports, which includes a digital passport allegedly including Lukashenko’s actual information.
Because of a typo on the first page of the phrase “Republic” and a misspelling of “Aleksandr,” some observers believe the information on the digital passport is phony.
The hackers claimed on Twitter that they attempted to sell the NFT collection on Tuesday, Lukashenko’s birthday, on the OpenSea marketplace. However, they indicated that the transaction was quickly canceled and that they are currently considering other options:
“The dictator has a birthday today — help us ruin it for him! Get our work of art today. A special offer— a New Belarus passport for Lukashenko where he’s behind the bars.”
According to an OpenSea spokesman, the initiative violated corporate policy by doing and exposing personally identifying information about another person without their agreement.
The Belarusian Cyber Partisans also indicated that they intend to sell NFTs containing the passport information of other government officials close to Lukashenko.
Lukashenko is a divisive person who has been in power in Belarus since the country’s founding in 1994. Despite being elected on the promise of eradicating corruption, he has been accused of “rigging elections, torturing critics, and arresting and beating protestors” in the past by organizations such as the Organize Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.
It is known that Lukashenko also irritated the group by supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The hacktivists regime claims to be fiercely opposed to what they perceive as a corrupt led by Lukashenko.
