South Korean Government’s Youtube Channel Hacked With Crypto Videos About Elon Musk

On Saturday, the South Korean government’s official YouTube channel was hacked, and those responsible aired a cryptocurrency-related video. According to local media citing Seoul sources, the film also included billionaire and crypto enthusiast Elon Musk. An official with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism overseeing the YouTube account said they were aware of the situation at 6 a.m., took security precautions, and restored the account at 7:20 a.m. on September 3.

On September 3, 2022, the South Korean government’s official YouTube channel was the target of a hacker attack. The offenders were able to broadcast a crypto-themed video, according to a report by the Korean Yonhap news agency based on remarks from Seoul government officials and Google.

The channel on the video-sharing platform appears to have been hacked in the early morning hours of Saturday, with its name altered to “SpaceX Invest.” It also aired a live cryptocurrency broadcast, which included an interview with Elon Musk, the creator and CEO of SpaceX.

A spokesman of the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, which manages the YouTube account, stated that the department staff became aware of the situation at about 6 a.m. They promptly implemented security measures and regained control of the channel around 7:20 a.m.

The main suspicion is that the account’s ID and password were taken. Google, YouTube’s parent company, confirmed that the channel had been hacked, Yonhap claimed, citing a Google Korea representative who stated that the business was investigating the hacking issue.

Elon Musk is an ardent supporter of crypto, but his tweets and jokes tend to “shill” for coins like DOGE. This has led to some influence on the crypto community. Last year, the same announcement that Tesla would accept payments in Bitcoin pushed the coin to surpass the $69,000 mark.

The attack comes on the heels of a hack of a YouTube channel run by the Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO), which is part of the tourism ministry. According to KTO, the channel, which has approximately 509,000 members, was first targeted on Thursday and then again the following day. The channel is currently down. According to a KTO official, Google immediately disables access to the account if it detects irregular connections.
