Bill Murray was enveloped in melancholy after a hacker made off with 119.2 ETH, or about $185,000, that had been donated to charity in exchange for a non-fungible token ticket that promised the winner the chance to have a beer with the celebrity.
Murray’s promotion team and Etherscan’s on-chain data indicate that the hackers monitored Murray’s personal wallet during the sale. Hackers removed the money from the wallet before the sale ended at around 7:00 PM, when the sale was finished.
The artifact was part of actor Bill Murray’s “Bill Murray 1000” collection, and it was put up for auction by The Shack in collaboration with Coinbase’s NFT world in an effort to give fans a chance to dine with the well-known actor while using blockchain technology.
“Only 82 of the 1,000 NFTs in the collection have been issued thus far (only the 1/1 comes with beer utility), and the least expensive edition is advertised on Coinbase’s (COIN) marketplace for 11 ETH, or almost $17,000.” Said Coinbase in a statement.
Before a security team from NFT consultancy Project Venkman arrived to protect the actor’s NFTs by blending the expensive JPEGs like a Damien Hirst NFT, two CryptoPunks, a Pudgy Penguin, a Cool Cat, and numerous Flower Girls that were already in the wallet, the hackers used false identities to transfer money to a wallet address linked to the cryptocurrency exchange Binance and Unionchain.ai.
According to reports, the hacker also attempted to steal 800 NFTs from the actor’s collection that were held in his personal account. However, the security team was promptly made aware of the fraudulent behavior and immediately executed a script to stop the transfer.
The procurement process to have dinner with the actor included six JPEG collectors, and there were 60 bids submitted. A Coinbase user named Brant Boersma outperformed them all and secured a date with the well-known actor who will also be included in a photograph.
It is unknown if the date will still occur given the money taken. A police report has been made, and Chainalysis is assisting law enforcement in their efforts to find and apprehend the offenders.
