Web3 game developer Sorare and the NBA have announced a multi-year partnership agreement and plans to release a Free-to-Play fantasy basketball game.
The game will be free to play and revolve around a user-created NFT collection of NBA stars based on real-life performance. According to the statement, the game will be released in October this year, in time for the 2022-2023 NBA season.
Dapper Labs’ NBA Top Shot used to be the king of the NFT market and accounted for most of weekly NFT transactions for months after its launch in December 2020, but it has plummeted since mid-2021.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said:
“Our partnership with Sorare will give NBA fans an entirely new way to engage with our teams and players. With Sorare’s emerging NFT fantasy platform, we see significant opportunities to broaden our community of fans and grow NBA basketball around the world.”
At the end of September 2021, Sorare raised $680 million from SoftBank at a valuation of $4.3 billion. The developer has recently signed a contract with the world’s highest-paid soccer star Kylian Mbappé.
