According the latest disclose, the Ethiopia Education Ministry had signed a contract with Input Output HK Limited (IOHK) to bring blockchain technologies into the education systems. This technology is based on the Cardano platform. If successful, the project will involve 750,000 teachers, and 3,680 schools in the new way of personal identification through blockchain’s new application. The Education Ministry Officials hope to end this year with half a million IDs issued.

This project is funded $200 mil by The World Bank 2 years ago, which is called the “digital foundations project”. The Ministry of Innovation & Technology of this country aims to issue IDs for at least 10 million citizens. At this stage, there are 100,000 IDs have been registered.

By using IDs, all information relevant to grades and academic credentials will be stored remotely instead of traditional management as usual. It is to reduce fraudulent issues and enhance the education system’s transparency as academic dishonesty is at an alarming rate.

In the roadmap of this project, IDs will be launched in primary and secondary schools, then will be applied in higher education institutions generally.

Besides all efforts to apply technologies into reality, this project will not yield many benefits if lacks Internet and network infrastructure support. That means IDs program is the initiative of higher digitization in various sectors.
