Nakamoto Almost Chose To Call Bitcoin Netcoin

It has come to light that Bitcoin’s (BTC) mysterious creator Satoshi Nakamoto may have had a different suggestion for the name of the leading cryptocurrency.

Historical domain registration data, in particular, reveals that the website associated to the original BTC, Bitcoin.org, which was registered on August 18, 2008, may have been called Netcoin.org. Interestingly, according to crypto locksmith Or Weinberger, Netcoin.org was registered a day before Bitcoin.org was established.

The two domains were purchased through the anonymous domain name purchasing provider AnonymousSpeech. Further investigation revealed that no information was ever published on the Netcoin.org domain prior to another person repurchasing it.

Additionally, the Netcoin.org domain was then erased before being reclaimed by a Web.com subsidiary in 2010.

Bitcoin’s enduring popularity

It is important to note that keeping the name BTC may have been essential to the cryptocurrency’s success, reducing the number of people claiming to be Satoshi Nakamoto.

For example, Australian computer expert Craig Wright has repeatedly stated that he is the real Satoshi Nakamoto, and the case is now in court.

In this instance, a London judge accepted Wright’s assertion that he was Satoshi Nakamoto, allowing the computer scientist to serve the BTC whitepaper’s publishers with copyright complaints.

Served by Bitcoin.org publisher

The publisher of Bitcoin.org, who goes by the alias Cbra, was one of the publishers. The publisher, a citizen of the UK, said he was willing to reveal his name in order to safeguard “the most significant paper of the 21st century.”

Wright is still fighting to establish his Nakamoto identity in the interim. Wright recently asserted that there were those who knew him and could vouch for the fact that he is Satoshi, according to Finbold.

Players in the cryptocurrency industry, including Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum (ETH), have called Wright a con artist. Wright was disqualified from being Satoshi, claims Buterin, after he started spreading inaccurate information about Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency industry.
