Crypto Enthusiast Discovers Copy Of Satoshi’s Bitcoin Code

A crypto enthusiast named Jim Blasko claims to have discovered the official earliest known posted copy of Satoshi’s Bitcoin code, which was initially uploaded in August 2009.

Blasko said in an October 7 Facebook post that he discovered code going back before Satoshi went public with Bitcoin by utilizing browser hacking on the open-source software development site SourceForge, where the cryptocurrency was registered in November 2008.

He said that it took the BTC founder six months to mine one million coins since block 20,000 wouldn’t be reached until July 22, 2009, and that others, such as Hal Finney, were also mining. Jim wrote in the post:

“Since 2012 it was thought that the raw code and the files were gone as they had been scraped from the soundforge search engine for some reason. My best memory of this beside moving over to Bitcoin.org, was some vulnerabilities in the early code that was best to hide on a new release and not show the code changes (a smart move as Bitcoin was super young at the time and a major vulnerability would be crucial to fix/hide before the masses came in).

I know many users where looking for the original v0.1 code for a very long time and Hal Finney was planning to email it to some people in 2012 but his health was poor and by his own words didn’t get online much to respond. I’m not sure if Hal ever did send it out, as Hal was the earliest to receive Bitcoin.v0.1 code from Satoshi.”

Satoshi’s personal notations, according to the two SourceForge URLs given by Blasko, included observations on why Bitcoin utilized base-58 instead of standard base-64 encoding:

Bitcoin so far still has a lot of mysteries that we have not been able to solve, even the identity of the creator of this currency is still a mystery to this day.
