Mark Zuckerberg Introduces New VR Headset With The Goal Of Working Professionally

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, the parent company of Facebook, debuted its new virtual-reality headset today.

Speaking at the company’s annual Meta Connect Conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced the launch of Meta Quest Pro VR, a new generation of virtual reality headsets priced at $1,499, many times higher than the previous version of Meta Quest 2 ($399 – $499).

While strengthening social connections may be the ultimate goal of the Facebook parent company’s mission statement — and the reason it claims to be investing billions of dollars in the metaverse — the company appears to be targeting businesses rather than everyday consumers with its pricey new VR headset.

“This is a high-end device designed for work and people who want the best experience we can build today. We’ve built Quest Pro to be the best device we can make for getting things done.”

According to Zuckerberg, the new VR headset will take office work to the next level, including many attractive and useful features such as advanced facial recognition; a Premium charging dock, and a marker controller for writing on VR whiteboards.

After spending the first part of the presentation reveling in the social change happening in Meta’s metaverse, Mark Zuckerberg moved on to share about the top social apps on the Quest store and demonstrated the suitability of the expensive Meta Quest Pro for business-class customers over everyday consumers.

A significant portion of the billionaire CEO’s speech was devoted to partnerships, particularly with Microsoft, Accenture, and Zoom. Because, Microsoft employees can use Meta headsets to access Microsoft Teams or Microsoft 365, meet colleagues or work in virtual space. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella commented:

“At Microsoft we’re incredibly excited about the metaverse and how digital and physical worlds are coming together and transforming everything the way we do work.”

Meta also revealed the role of global consulting firm Accenture in assisting with the staging of large-scale virtual reality events. Accenture CEO Julie Sweet confirmed they have deployed 60,000 Meta Quest 2 headsets.

In February, Meta said the virtual social network had reached 300,000 users. As of June of this year, Meta has sold nearly 15 million Meta Quest 2 VR, making it the best-selling device in its category, according to research analyst Francisco Jeronimo of IDC.

As soon as Zuckerberg announced his company would pursue the field, many employees disagreed. Recently, the leader of Meta’s metaverse department even complained about the development team being indifferent to Horizon Worlds and asked employees to care about this platform.
