According to a press release by the Justice Department: these two men from Massachusetts took over the victim’s social media accounts and stole their cryptocurrency using techniques such as SIM swapping. Soon after, two he was arrested and sentenced to prison. Declan Harrington, 22, was sentenced to two years and seven days in prison and Eric Meiggs, 24, was sentenced to two years and one day in prison.
The announcement further adds that Meiggs and Harrington want to target executives and others who are likely to have a significant amount of cryptocurrency and people with high net worth or network account names OG (Original Gangster) society.
The initial allegation was that the duo attempted to steal over $550,000 in cryptocurrency. However, according to the latest announcement, the duo targeted “at least 10 identified victims” who stole “approximately $330,000 in cryptocurrency.”
SIM swapping is a way of bypassing two-factor authentication by using mobile operators to break into sensitive websites such as cryptocurrency exchanges and online banking. Several individuals in have fallen victim to SIM swapping.
Meiggs and Harrington were each arrested by the FBI in 2019 on 7 counts of conspiracy, wire fraud, fraud and computer abuse. There is also severe identity theft in 2021.
