In court records, Truglia was described as part of a gang of “evil computer geniuses” who duped telecom technicians into changing consumers’ mobile phone numbers to SIM cards controlled by the hackers.
However, he is the only one facing criminal accusations. For the brazen attacks, which targeted affluent crypto leaders on opposite sides of the US, he has already received legal judgments totaling over $80 million.
Truglia faced up to 63 months in prison, with 12 months already served.
He was sentenced for a hack attack in 2018 on Michael Terpin, the founder and CEO of Transform Group, which provides public relations guidance to blockchain startups. After getting access to Terpin’s cryptocurrency accounts, the hackers hired Truglia to convert the stolen Triggers, a digital token, into Bitcoin, defense lawyer Jeffrey Udell claimed in court on Wednesday.
Udell disclosed that his client had recently been given an autistic diagnosis, which he claimed made it more difficult for Truglia to distinguish between the actual world and the virtual one. Truglia, according to him, was a very intelligent individual with no other friends or family members outside the contacts he met online.
During his sentencing hearing, it was revealed that he has $53 million in assets, including cryptocurrency, art, and jewelry, and that he has agreed to pay more than $20 million in restitution.
“I would never steal from someone face to face, so the fact I did that on the Internet is shameful,” he said in a lengthy statement before sentencing.
In May 2019, investor Michael Terpin obtained a $75.8 million legal judgment against Truglia.
