Domestic Crypto Miners Are Taken Action Against Russian Energy Companies

According to the authorities, Russian energy companies are on the lookout for illicit crypto miners who work from home.

Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Snikkars noted that some “home”-based miners” have successfully modified the load profile of their electrical connections, allowing them to provide more power to their rigs.

The nation’s government has yet to ratify crypto mining rules, while MPs have claimed that it could be voted on next week, clearing the door for industrial mining to be permitted in early 2023.

However, some energy providers are unable to wait much longer. Many people have already requested the country’s courts to assist them in prosecuting people who use subsidized “home-rate” electricity to run crypto mining machines.

While legislation was still in the works, Snikkars claimed that in some cases “it can be established in court that residents have utilized electricity for purposes other than residential necessities.” A crypto mining hub can now identify domestic miners by examining load data at power substations.

If the inspectors determine that crypto miners were present at the address in question, tenants will “either be issued a new invoice for their power – charged at industrial rates” or must appear in court to establish their innocence.

According to Russian energy companies, a property that houses crypto mining rigs might consume up to 40% more electricity than the average.
