Key Points:
The Mr. Wonderful character Kevin O’Leary’s official Twitter account has been pushing gifts of bitcoin and ethereum since Thursday morning. The account stated that O’Leary had decided to give away 5,000 bitcoin and 15,000 ether because he had gained significant money from cryptocurrencies over the past few years. The tweet also includes a link that anyone can use to participate in the fake cryptocurrency giveaway event.
The O’Leary Twitter account further claimed that it was not hacked and that the giveaways were not scams. It also falsely claimed that Mr. Wonderful said on CNBC last night that he would away some cryptocurrencies for real.
Investors can access the official website for O’Leary’s bitcoin and ether giveaway by clicking the link in the first tweet. The website states that “everyone can participate, even those in the United States.” Two additional URLs are provided, one for the BTC giveaway and the other for the ETH giveaway.
A few hours after they were published, Twitter erased the fraudulent giveaway posts.
Scams involving cryptocurrency giveaways are expected on several social media sites, including Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram.
Hackers frequently utilize the accounts of well-known individuals, politicians, celebrities, and businesses to spread the word about their fraudulent freebies. The Tesla and SpaceX businesses owned by Elon Musk are frequently mentioned in these con games.
The con artist who developed the false websites for the Elon Musk and Tesla giveaways also utilized them for the O’Leary offer. Both the bitcoin and ether giveaway pages for the Shark Tank star featured the Tesla logo on top and were housed on a website with the name Tesla in the URL, in addition to comments on O’Leary’s giveaway webpage praising Musk for sending them some BTC.
