Key Points:
According to a job posting on the government website, investigators working for the national cybercrime unit’s Crypto Cell shall be dedicated to a proactive cryptocurrency remit with the relevant tools and capacities to target UK-based suspects.
The Financial Conduct Authority discovered that between March 2021 and April 2022, financial fraud alerts in the UK were most prevalent in the cryptocurrency sector. During that time, the agency opened 432 cases to investigate schemes involving cryptocurrencies.
The NCA is looking to engage a cryptocurrency investigator with solid experience in conducting blockchain forensic investigations on serious and organized crime as part of the project.
The new NCA crypto crime unit will be responsible for advising detectives on both the strategic and tactical aspects of cases involving cryptocurrencies, helping both ongoing and fresh investigations. Experience in locating and recovering seed words as well as sophisticated blockchain tracing are requirements for the post.
The decision to establish a law enforcement unit with a focus on cryptocurrencies comes in response to an increase in cryptocurrency fraud in the UK and the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s placement of crypto tactical advisers in police stations nationwide last year. In November, lawmakers decided to give local law enforcement the authority to seize cryptocurrency linked to criminal and terrorist activity.
