Key Points:
According to a February 2 announcement, the firm has incorporated a number of improvements that the group claims would give users more control over their data. These capabilities include the ability to turn certain settings that control the sharing of user data to third-party services on and off. These services assist customers in avoiding phishing attempts as well as decoding incoming transactions.
It also made switching RPC (remote procedure call) providers easier. RPC providers provide nodes that enable programs like MetaMask to connect to blockchains and broadcast user transactions to supported networks. Users can now select their preferred RPC provider rather than utilizing Infura, which is the default on the wallet.
To change their RPC provider, new users can go to “Set advanced privacy settings” in MetaMask. Existing users can discover this option under “settings,” according to the notice.
This upgrade comes after ConsenSys was chastised for collecting user data through Infura. ConsenSys is a blockchain software startup that owns MetaMask and Infura. This admission sparked privacy worries among cryptocurrency users.
Coincu reported in November last year, Infura is essentially regarded as the “heart” of the Ethereum ecosystem; the project acts as the critical infrastructure on the Ethereum blockchain. Infura contains a complete set of Ethereum network nodes, allowing developers to connect to these nodes.
ConsenSys explained that if users utilized other RPC providers, it did not gather user data. Prior to this upgrade, users may configure different RPC endpoints on their MetaMask.
