The FBI Seized $260,000 In Crypto From An NFT Hacker Discovered By ZachXBT

Key Points:
  • The FBI took multiple assets from Chase Senecal, according to a forfeiture document provided by the agency on February 4.
  • The crypto sleuth tracked transactions related to many NFT attacks and discovered that the account used to purchase the watch was linked to the thefts.
Following a tip from pseudonymous blockchain sleuth ZachXBT, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation seized over $260,000 in NFTs and cryptocurrencies.

The FBI confiscated multiple assets from Chase Senecal, a resident of Brunswick, Maine, according to a forfeiture document issued by the agency on February 4, including 86.5678 ETH ($116,433) and two NFTs: Bored Ape Yacht Club #9658 ($95,495) and Doodle #3114 ($9,361). The investigators also seized a $41,000 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Watch.

ZachXBT, a self-described crypto detective, facilitated the seizure after completing an extensive study into Chase Senecal, also known online as HZ. “It’s wonderful to know one of the key perpetrators (Chase Senecal) for NFT/crypto phishing assaults has been discovered after months and months of following their gang,” wrote in a September 1 tweet.

The crypto sleuth tracked transactions related to many NFT attacks and discovered that the account used to purchase the watch was linked to the thefts. The FBI apparently took note of his observations and confiscated the materials on October 24, 2022, many weeks later.

According to the investigative summary, Cam (SIM swapper) sold Twitter panel access to Senecal in June of last year, who then utilized it to get access to Twitter accounts and swindle NFT holders. Senecal subsequently used the stolen money to buy the AP watch, which led to his arrest. Many Discord server hacks are linked to the address HZ paid for the watch.

Except for the fact that all of the estates were apprehended on October 24, the FBI’s announcement gave little more information regarding the occurrence. Furthermore, the full breadth of Senecal’s legal cases is unknown. Notably, the FBI has not formally acknowledged ZachXBT’s work into the attacks, but the crypto sleuth stated in a recent Twitter thread that his investigation led to the asset arrest. “As a consequence of my thread, the FBI seized crypto, BAYC 9658, AP watch, and Doodle 3114 from the phishing scammer known as Horror (HZ) alias Chase Senecal,” he claimed.

ZachXBT earlier alleged that Senecal was a part of a multi-million dollar crypto operation that infiltrated over 600 Discord servers and 12 Twitter accounts. Senecal’s hacking compromised accounts belonging to the NFT project JRNY Club and animator DeeKay Kwon.
