Amazon Ventures Alexa Fund Successfully Leads A $20 Million Investment In Superplastic 3

On February 15, Web3-friendly entertainment startup Superplastic concluded a 20 million US dollar A-4 round of funding headed by Amazon’s venture capital department Alexa Fund, Google Ventures, Galaxy Digital, Sony Japan, Animoca Brands, Craft Ventures, and others. Superplastic has developed over 25,000 NFTs, including the PFP series (with a total transaction volume of $3.2 million) and the NFT series with Gucci (with a total transaction volume of more than $10 million). Cryptojankyz, its NFT series, started in July 2021 with a total transaction volume of almost $15.2 million. Superplastic has already raised a total of $58 million in investment.

As part of the agreement, Amazon Studios will receive a first-look contract with Superplastic, which means the company will have first dibs on any television series or film pitches starring Superplastic’s characters. “The Janky & Guggimon Show,” starring two Superplastic virtual celebrities, is in the works at Amazon Studios, which has previously created edgy, offbeat comedies such as “The Boys” and “Fleabag.”

The two characters are “lazy and outrageously stupid best friends,” according to a statement, with Janky described as a “loveable moron who spends his spare time scamming celebs” and Guggimon as a “fashion star and master manipulator who’s too selfish to care.”

The fact that Superplastic’s characters “meet their consumers where they are” (on social media and in video games like “Fortnite”) is a huge part of the attraction, according to Paul Bernard, head of Amazon’s Alexa Fund.
