Ethereum Sepolia Testnet Will Activate New Upgrade Shapella On February 28

Key Points:

  • The Sepolia testnet is scheduled to launch on February 28, 2023 and will allow developers to test new features and changes that will be introduced during the hard fork.
  • The Shanghai hard fork is expected to bring a number of improvements to the Ethereum network, including changes to gas fees, block rewards, and transaction validation.
  • The launch of the Sepolia testnet is a major milestone in the development of the Shanghai hard fork and will allow developers to identify and fix any issues before the hard fork is launched on the mainnet.
After months of testing and a temporary devnet launch, the Shanghai/Capella network upgrade (aka Shapella) is now scheduled to be deployed on Sepolia testnet. The Shapella network upgrade will activate on the Sepolia network scheduled for 4:04:48 AM UTC on February 28, 2023.

This upgrade follows The Merge and allows validators to withdraw staked Ethereum from the beacon chain to the execution layer, while introducing new features to the execution layer and consensus layer (combined) and tool API changes. Zhejiang test network can be used to test Shapella functionality before upgrading Sepolia.

The second network to receive the upgrade is Sepolia, a closed test network accessible only to Ethereum engineers. The Zhejiang testnet successfully simulated the withdrawal of its own staked ETH earlier this week. The main Ethereum blockchain is anticipated to experience the Shanghai hard fork next month after one more test network has been set up for the upgrade.

Developers running validators on the network are not intended to use the Sepolia Test Network. In contrast, Zhejiang is a public testnet, making it accessible to anyone who wants to experiment issuing staking ETH, including staking providers.

The last testnet to undergo the Shanghai update is Goerli, which will happen once Sepolia has gone through its own round of testing. The most anticipated test will be Goerli since it is the biggest public Ethereum testnet and represents staking providers’ last opportunity to confirm that staking ETH withdrawals function before Shanghai goes live on the main network.

According to Barnabas Busa, a DevOps engineer at the Ethereum Foundation, “the number of visitors participating and the network traffic” determine how the three tests differ from one another.

This will be Ethereum’s first hard fork since Consolidation, which replaced its outdated, energy-intensive proof-of-work (PoW) architecture with a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus, took place in September. In accordance with PoS, ETH is “secured” on the blockchain as a method to support transaction validation and security.

According to previous news, on February 7, Zhejiang, Ethereum’s first public withdrawal test network, successfully simulated the Shanghai upgrade. Earlier, the developer stated that after upgrading the Sepolia testnet, they plan to release the Shanghai upgrade on the Ethereum Goerli testnet in late February or early March. change successfully, it will switch to main network.
