Maxime Bernier, founder and leader of the People’s Party of Canada, said he supports the introduction of cryptocurrencies Bitcoin in the country.
In a September 14 tweet, Bernier speak Cryptocurrencies are “another new and innovative way” to combat the actions of central banks which he believes are “destroying money and our economy.” Canadian politician who be reprimanded Bank of Canada for “printing money” and calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his economic policy.
Bernier, a former cabinet minister known to some as Mad Max, has spoken out in criticism of Canada’s vaccination regulations at a time when COVID-19 infections continue to rise in the country. He has also advocated an end to the door and mask bans and is against the introduction of a vaccination record.
The statements of the politician come before the federal elections in Canada, which are scheduled for September 20, in which the People’s Party does not currently have a seat in the country’s parliament. Although many right-wing politicians around the world have taken a pro-crypto stance as part of their campaigns or guidelines in office, the role of Bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrency does not seem to be a question of one side.
Canada often paves the way for many initiatives in the crypto space. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is a Russian-Canadian and investment firm has successfully launched exchange-traded crypto funds while US regulators have yet to make a decision on how to proceed.
However, many Canadian lawmakers, including Trudeau, are largely silent about the role of cryptocurrencies in the country’s economy. Trudeau’s half-brother Kyle Kemper is an outspoken Dogecoin (DOGE) enthusiast who the Canadian government once paid to speak at a blockchain conference.
Cointelegraph reached out to the People’s Party of Canada but had received no response at the time of publication.
