Solana Labs: On-chain Voting Causes Network Disruption Is ‘Pure Ignorance’.

Key Points:
  • After the system failure, Anatoly Yakovenko, founder and CEO of Solana Labs, stated that his words were the consequence of pure ignorance.
  • akovenko did not completely contradict DBCryptoX’s allegation that 90-95% of Solana transactions contain validator messages and on-chain votes, which DBCryptoX feels helps to keep the system afloat.
On February 28, in response to Solana’s network downtime on February 25, Twitter user DBCryptoX posted a contentious tweet claiming that a significant volume of validator messages and on-chain voting are clogging the network.

Anatoly Yakovenko, founder and CEO of Solana Labs, replied by calling his views the result of “total ignorance,” stating that voting as part of a “one huge quorum” helps give “great security, high throughput, and cheap cost”. Nevertheless, Yakovenko could not completely reject DBCryptoX’s allegation that 90-95% of Solana transactions contain validator messages and on-chain votes, which DBCryptoX says helps to “float the system.”

Moreover, DBCryptoX said that the Solana network outage lasted 20 hours because validators needed a significant amount of time to convene and gain consensus (or seek a resolution) via off-chain techniques (such as messaging systems such as Discord). According to Solana ecological wallet Phantom software engineer Alex Kroeger, the cause for the network outage might be several, and the validators of the proof-of-stake system require a considerable amount of network traffic to achieve verification.

According to the study, Solana mainnet performance concerns finally caused validator nodes to adopt a “voting-only” security mode at 5:46:16 UTC on February 25, 2023. Although consensus voting transactions may be completed normally, the network is unable to handle user transactions. Professionals troubleshooting the issue advised rebooting the network. While v1.14 was just pushed out, the validator community unanimously voted to downgrade to the previous stable version, v1.13.6, in order to reduce the danger of reboots. The initial restart attempt was halted to allow for more complete data analysis and to confirm that no user transactions were impacted. Upon additional investigation, the community collectively rebooted the network using an older slot than had previously been picked. Unconfirmed user transactions were reverted or impacted.
