The Sandbox: Third-Party Hacks Staff Computers, Sends Dangerous Emails

Key Points:
  • The Sandbox detected that an unauthorized third party obtained access to a team member’s computer and exploited its authority to send a bogus email.
  • According to the team, after the illegal access was found, the receiver was alerted, and the employee’s account and access to The Sandbox were blocked, with no additional consequences outlined.
The Sandbox issued a security incident warning on March 2 according to the official announcement.

As stated in the notification, an unauthorized third party obtained access to the computer of a Sandbox team member and exploited its authority to send a bogus email. The email, headed “The Sandbox Game (PURELAND) Access,” contained hyperlinks to malware that may remotely install malware on a user’s computer, providing it control of the device and access to the user’s personal information right. According to The Sandbox, once the unlawful access was found, the receiver was alerted, and the employee’s account and access to The Sandbox were deactivated, with no additional consequences outlined.

The team is working on this event to ensure that no users are impacted. The Sandbox immediately notified the known recipients of the bogus email that the access was illegal and instructed them not to open, play, or download anything from the hyperlinked website. The team has disabled the employee’s accounts and access to The Sandbox, reformatted the employee’s laptop, reset all relevant passwords, and implemented two-factor authentication. They have found no further effects. However, they are working with the staff to monitor the situation and improve our security rules and processes.

Moreover, the technical team encourages users to improve their security measures, such as using strong passwords and using two-factor authentication, in order to make the accounts as secure as possible. Do not click on any of the URLs in the above-mentioned email or any other emails you believe are fraudulent. Install and run a reliable antivirus product as quickly as possible to detect and remove any infections.
