Key Points:
Today, Ethereum developers announced that they have successfully deployed the Shanghai hard fork to the Goerli testnet, smoothly testing the ability to withdraw ETH staking. This opens up the possibility that Shanghai will be officially put on the Ethereum mainnet in mid-April.
Even so, the percentage of validators on Goerli participating in the test reached 29%, making the upgrade validation time longer than expected. Developer Ben Edgington commented that validators rarely participate in testing because they still need to prepare nodes for the round.
As reported by Coin68, the Shanghai upgrade, also known as Shapella, is the next major Ethereum-wide hard fork following The Merge in September 2022. Shanghai will bring an essential adjustment to the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency network, unlocking more than 17.5 million ETH locked in staking contracts.
Shanghai was previously successfully tested on the private testnet and the Sepolia testnet. At the beginning of March, the Ethereum development team expected the hard fork to unlock ETH staking to be available on the Ethereum mainnet in mid-April but has not announced a specific timeline.
ETH price on the evening of March 14 surged to its highest level of $1.78 since The Merge as the cryptocurrency market rebounded strongly from last week’s series of bad news. Currently, it is trading at $1.71.
