Scam Alert

Hacker Ronin Attempts To Scam $200 Million From Hacker Euler Finance

Key Points:

  • Euler Finance’s recovery of stolen $200 million ran into problems when a wallet linked to North Korean hacker Ronin attempted to defraud miners of the DeFi protocol.
  • The act of sending 2 ETH by hacker Ronin to hacker Euler is believed to be a scam to steal credentials from the Euler attacker’s wallet.
  • Minutes after the hacker wallet Ronin texted hacker Euler’s wallet, the developers at Euler Finance attempted to intervene with their own messages.
Yesterday, the address marked as hacker Ronin on-chain sent an on-chain message to the address marked as hacker Euler asking it to decrypt an encrypted message.

This makes the recovery of stolen Euler Finance funds a big problem.

In the transaction that included this message, hacker Ronin sent 2 ETH to hacker Euler. But experts say the message is a scam to steal credentials from the Euler attacker’s wallet.

Developers at Euler Finance attempted to interfere with their own messages a short time after the Ronin hacker wallet messaged the Euler hacker wallet. The simplest solution in this situation is to refund the funds. They advised their own hacker, warning him to be aware of the meaningful decryption software.

“Do not try to view that message under any context. Do not enter your private key anywhere. A reminder that your machine may also be compromised.”

Euler developers continued in a separate transaction.

Hudson Jameson, a former developer at the Ethereum Foundation, said hacker Ronin’s proposal could be a lightly disguised attempt to trick Euler hackers into handing over the private keys they stole from Euler Finance and thus electronic money delivery. However, he said the motivation behind the on-chain message remains to be determined.

According to yesterday’s news, Euler is in private talks with the attacker, who said he “has no intention of keeping things that don’t belong to him.”

Hacker Ronin, alleged to be the North Korean Lazarus hacker group, last March stole more than $600 million from the hit crypto game Axie Infinity.
