Scammers Are Targeting Crypto Enthusiasts With New Game Developer Scam

Key Points:

  • A cryptocurrency user’s wallet assets were stolen after downloading a game demo from an unknown developer.
  • After clicking the program, the user’s wallet assets were stolen from nearly 60 wallets on their browser.
Recently, a cryptocurrency user shared their experience of being scammed by a game developer who had reached out to them on Telegram. The user, defioasis.eth, was contacted by a developer called MetaWorldMatrix, who announced that their game would launch in May.

The developer claimed to have seen some of the user’s past Twitter content and wanted to talk to them about it. They sent the user a demo video of the game and “photos and gifts from an event in Dubai.” Intrigued by the offer, the user agreed to talk with the developer on Telegram. They discussed token economics, the status quo of the game market, and the developer’s game design philosophy.

After the conversation, the developer invited the user to participate in the internal testing of the game and even pulled them into a Discord community with over 10,000 people. Feeling optimistic about the project, the user followed the developer’s instructions and downloaded a compressed package with a bunch of keys. However, after clicking the program, there was no response. The developer provided several solutions to the issue, but none worked. The user eventually gave up and went to bed, not realizing their wallet assets had been stolen.

The next day, the user found that their wallet assets had been transferred out of nearly 60 wallets on their browser, with $10,000-20,000 USD of assets stolen. Although the user was fortunate that their frequently used wallet addresses were not affected, dozens of obsolete addresses were compromised, resulting in invaluable time and cost.

This story is a reminder to always exercise caution when downloading files or following instructions from unknown sources, especially in cryptocurrency, where scams are becoming more prevalent. Doing thorough research on any project or individual before engaging with them is crucial and never giving out personal information or access to wallets or accounts. Always be wary of unsolicited messages and offers, and remember that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
