Key Points:
The major emphasis of the question-and-answer session will be on unlawful cryptocurrency activities, as well as precautionary steps that may be taken to avoid falling victim to illegal fraud and money-making schemes.
It’s unclear why the service wants to organize the AMA now, but the notice frames the event as a way to educate crypto users in order to keep them safe from crime:
“Here in San Francisco, we have a squad dedicated to keeping cryptocurrency and its users safe. We are comprised of Special Agents and Analysts who have embraced the future of money, and we’re eager to share our work with this cryptocurrency community and provide resources and education to help keep your money safe. We’re also eager to learn from you.”
The United States has a horrible reputation for its management of the crypto sector throughout the years. Although the US SEC and CFTC continue to clamp down on crypto firms operating in the nation, the US Secret Service has adopted a different approach.
The Reddit post commented on the reasoning for this move, stating that the US Secret Service wants to connect with the cryptocurrency community and address any issues or questions the community may have concerning digital asset legislation.
The service’s account, SF-USSS, also provided a verification picture on the image-sharing website Imgur, purporting to depict a service agent standing at the San Francisco field office. The event is co-hosted by the Regional Enforcement Allied Computer Team, which combines state and federal law enforcement activities in the fight against digital crime. REACT’s handle is REACT-TF.
The validity of the Secret Service account was verified by the subreddit administrator. They told the community that it had been validated in a private conversation. The moderator highlighted the significance of addressing Secret Service agents as “guests.” They advised the community to be kind and polite throughout the AMA session.
The Secret Service was cited as stating during today’s AMA on the Bitcoin Subreddit:
“In the past 12 months, our team has investigated ‘Pig Butchering’ cryptocurrency thefts and we have recovered millions in stolen funds. We want to share resources and tips on how to protect potential victims from cryptocurrency scammers.”
A pig butchering scam involves a customer being solicited on social media by someone acting as a possible friend, love interest, or representative of a reputable financial institution.
