Key Points:
Although the reveal has stirred the excitement of tech enthusiasts, it has also raised some eyebrows due to one glaring omission – not a single mention of the word “metaverse.”
This seems to be a deliberate move by the tech company, as it has instead chosen to call its technology the first “spatial computer.” The headset is set to release in the U.S. in early 2024, with a retail price of $3,499, and will soon be available in other countries as well.
Compared to Microsoft’s Hololens and Meta’s headsets, which both heavily used the term “metaverse” during their respective launches, Apple’s marketing seems to be more focused on the words “spatial” and “spatial computing,” rather than terms like “AR” and “VR.”
According to Mike Rockwell, Apple’s vice president of technology development group, “Creating our first spatial computer required invention across nearly every facet of the system. Through a tight integration of hardware and software, we designed a standalone spatial computer in a compact wearable form factor that is the most advanced personal electronics device ever.”
However, back in January 2022, Bloomberg’s Apple tech reporter Mark Gurman suggested via Twitter that Apple has no intention of approaching the sector in a similar vein to Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, particularly relating to the notion of the Metaverse. Gurman stated that Apple’s focus will be on providing a mixed-reality headset intended for use in short bursts for work, gaming, communication, and other applications, rather than creating a completely virtual world where users can escape to.
Apple’s Vision Pro boasts both augmented reality and virtual reality capabilities, making it possible for apps to be projected into the nearby physical space around the user, or to provide a fully virtual experience via modes such as Immersive Environments. With the world’s first spatial operating system, visionOS, users can interact with digital content in a way that feels like it is physically present in their space.
