Last week’s sports and crypto news was filled with fresh controversy, with another highlighting yet another sports sponsorship – this time with an NBA team.
Just days after signing a shirt sales deal with esports organization Fnatic, Crypto.com is returning to traditional club and ball sponsorship. The exchange secured a deal with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, a deal that Bloomberg said brought in over $ 400 million in funding spending for the year Crypto.com. The move is a new change for Sixers fans who have made headlines over the rumors of Ben Simmons’ departure. The new partnership will be the second crypto jersey patch in the NBA, with the first being StormX and the Portland Trail Blazers.
Meanwhile, in what is certainly a less visible move, Crypto.com has also signed an agreement with ‘DeFi The Game’, a fandom startup, in a partnership that aims to offer NFT collections tailored to global cricketers.
While many exchanges have aggressively pursued sports sponsorship deals this year, Crypto.com and FTX certainly have the edge in both visibility and spending.
Last week covered a number of NBA athletes expressing their enthusiasm for crypto and NFTs. NBA keeper John Wall has released his own NFT series “Baby Baller”.
However, the project met with significant criticism from NFT collectors, who were quick to claim that the backdrop for ‘Baby Baller’ was copied from the Fortnite video game and that the design was incongruous in film baby ”.
Baby Ballers is slated for official release next week, but it’s been a difficult start for Wall and his team.
Oregon’s defense Kayvon Thibodeaux sustained an ankle injury early in the college football season. As the manager looks to his anticipated return to the field in the upcoming games, he wants to take advantage of the same name change, image and landscape.
Thibodeaux is launching its own crypto token, $ JREAM, on the rally platform. The name of the token comes from the Athlete’s Jream Foundation, which he founded to give disadvantaged youth more opportunities.
Among other things, Thibodeaux has signed a six-digit memorabilia deal and a partnership with United Airlines. It’s a new era for other sports stars and crypto is ready for it. In a Sports Slice earlier this month, we covered UCLA basketball player Jaylen Clark, who became the first D1 college athlete to create his own crypto token.
Football clubs around the world have so far been quite receptive to crypto transactions and fan tokens, with clubs like Juventus, PSG and AC Milan dominating the larger fan base.
More cryptocurrency deals surfaced last week. Southampton, which has entered into a partnership with the crypto sports betting platform Sportsbet.io, has found a new partner in learningncrypto.com. The crypto education platform will sponsor the club’s training kit and seek to “promote widely the positive effects that cryptocurrencies can have”.
Demarcus Cousins has been considered one of the best big boys in the NBA for many years. Although an injury has limited his career, Cousins is still respected for his skills.
Last week, Cousins released NFT 1/1 in collaboration with Animator DeeKay. NFT was originally sold for 3.5ETH.

Following Crypto.com’s previous partnership with F1, FTX has signed a deal with Mercedes F1. The multi-year contract provides for FTX branding on cars and driver uniforms. Branding will be announced immediately, with the Russian Grand Prix being the first event this weekend to showcase FTX brand values. NFTs and general corporate social responsibility events will also be among the latter cards.
