Vitalik Buterin And Polygon Co-Founder Lead The Charge With $100M Donation to COVID-19 Research

Key Points:

  • Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal work with Crypto Relief to donate $100M to COVID-19 research in India.
  • $90M in USD Coin from Crypto Relief and $10M from Buterin will be distributed by Nailwal and Buterin.
  • Research areas focus on COVID-19 airborne transmission and Long COVID.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, along with India-based crypto fund Crypto Relief and Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal, have teamed up to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in India.

The trio is set to donate a whopping $100 million towards COVID-19 research and medical infrastructure development in India.

The donation will be made in two parts: $90 million in USD Coin from Crypto Relief and an additional $10 million from Buterin’s personal funds. Once the money is transferred, Buterin and Nailwal will work together to distribute the funds to where they are needed most.

According to a January 2022 Twitter post from Nailwal, the funds will be transferred to Buterin to ensure that Crypto Relief remains in full compliance with local laws.

The first installment of the donation will be utilized to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic in India through “emergency humanitarian relief.” This is a crucial step as India has been one of the hardest-hit countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Buterin recently explained on Twitter that COVID-19 and “future pandemics” will continue to pose a “large risk in the 21st century.” He believes that we need a “global solution” that combines “frontier scientific innovation” and “on-the-ground implementation.”

The donation will go towards two main research areas: COVID-19 airborne transmission and Long COVID. Buterin believes that improving ventilation, HEPA filtering, and experimental tech like UVC irradiation will help tackle the issue of airborne transmission. Meanwhile, Long COVID research will continue to be a primary focus, as many people are still experiencing symptoms long after their initial COVID-19 infection.

Buterin has also revealed that the $100 million will be disbursed to a Gnosis Safe wallet using the following contract address: 0xB36082ba6c35490D1E167CC6Dd5ad20884A21Afb. This ensures that the funds will be fully transparent and traceable.

The first $100 million donation was deployed by Buterin in late January 2022 or soon after, which initially came in the form of Shiba Inu (SHIB). The donation is expected to have a significant impact on the fight against COVID-19 in India and serve as an inspiration for others to help in the global fight against the pandemic.
