Bitcoin billionaire Mircea Popescu is said to have died from drowning

According to the local media agency Costa Rica, Mircea Popescu, who has been pro-Bitcoin acceptor since 2011 and father of the MPEx exchange founded in April 2012, drowned in the sea.

The Costa Rican Bureau of Judicial Investigation (OIJ) identified the 41-year-old drowned man as Mircea Popescu. The tragic incident happened around 8:30 a.m. when Popescu went swimming in the Tramonto area, was carried away by currents and died on the spot.

Journalists added that Popescu was found on the beach by medical personnel from the Costa Rican Red Cross early in the morning on June 23. Unfortunately, they couldn’t save him.

Tuur Demeester, a veteran crypto investor and author of Bitcoin Reformation, announced on his personal page that one of the most important early Bitcoin (BTC) supporters, Mircea Popescu, is believed to be dead. He has temporarily disabled personal viewing so that he cannot access this information.

However, the information has been confirmed by reputable people in the crypto community, particularly veteran investor Nopara. Surprisingly, Nopara also said that Mircea Popescu earned an estimated 30,000 BTC in 2013, which is around $ 1 billion.

In 2008 Mircea Popescu started Trilema, a blog about social and personal topics. As of 2012, he wrote about Bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrencies. In April 2012, he founded MPEx, one of the first Bitcoin-friendly trading services. This bitcoin legend once claimed he was the only person who ever owned 1 million bitcoin (BTC).

In 2014, he paid all of the bills to the nonprofit behind the OpenBSD operating system to pay tribute to those involved in the approach to security. OpenBSD boss Theo de Raadt admitted that the operating system would in fact no longer work if funding was not secured, and expressed his deep thanks to Mircea Popescu.

This is really sad news for the majority of the crypto community. We have to see the same unexpected ending all the time over the past week. John McAfee initially suspected suicide in prison after being extradited to the United States for tax evasion, and now Mircea Popescu. May all things be peaceful so that nothing like this happens in the future.
