Damus Adjusts Zaps Function To Avoid Being Removed From Apple App Store

Key Points:

  • Apple has given the Bitcoin-friendly app Damus permission to continue operating after the throttling.
  • The new version of Damus will no longer have zaps, a functionality deemed infringing by the App Store, but will still allow users to send zaps to each other at the profile level.
  • The deal follows a two-week battle on June 13 when the tech giant threatened to remove it from the App Store for violating the company’s in-app purchase regulations.
Bitcoin-friendly social media app Damus received approval to stay in the Apple App Store on Wednesday following a consensus to remove the zaps functionality.

According to the app developer, the new version of Damus will no longer support using zaps in posts. This unique feature of Damus allows users to send small amounts of bitcoins to content creators through the Lightning Network, similar to Twitter’s “tipping” feature. Guide by allowing tips or “amounts” for content to be paid for in Bitcoin (BTC) instead of Apple Pay.

“Had to remove the tip button to stay on the app store. I will still build Damus on iOS as a vanilla Nostr client, but it you want to zap posts, apple says nah.” Damus App developer William Casarin.

This is also the reason why Apple wants the application to remove because Apple thinks of it as the equivalent of selling digital content but still allowing users to tip each other on a profile.

It started on June 13 when the tech giant threatened to remove it from the App Store for violating the company’s in-app purchase regulations.

Apple has been criticized by the Bitcoin community – among them former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey – with complaints that it is hindering Bitcoin adoption by imposing overly rigid guidelines regarding Bitcoin-friendly apps on the App Store.

Not only that, but Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong also criticized Apple for being disrespectful to its customers and damaging the brand’s image by removing the app from the App Store shelves.

However, some Damus supporters see the approval as a small victory despite the compromise to limit posts.
