A variety of other online crypto trading platforms in Russia had to close following the recent regional court ruling. The information posted on their websites is considered illegal, which means that Roskomnadzor, the country’s telecommunications guardian, can block access to the platforms.

Some websites that offer cryptocurrency exchange, withdrawal and transfer options with different payment methods can be blocked by Roskomnadzor if their operator does not remove illegal websites.

The threat to online crypto platforms arises from a court ruling that recognizes their content as prohibited.

In early September, the Kushnarenkovsky District Court in Bashkortostan, a Republic of the Russian Federation, confirmed that the information that the platforms disseminate is prohibited under current law.

The list of 17 websites affected by the decision includes:

In its judgment, the court found that the platforms offer free access without registration.

“Every user can familiarize himself with the content and copy the document in electronic form. There are no restrictions on transmission, reproduction and distribution. “

According to Digital Rights Center, a law firm employed by the operators of six of the cryptocurrency exchanges, the website owners have not been brought to court at all. Sarkis Darbinyan, the company’s managing partner, stated that the websites were apparently identified on the cryptocurrency exchange aggregator Bestchange.ru.

In recent years, websites with Bitcoin-related content and crypto services in Russia have often been targeted with restrictions. Roskomnadzor blocked Bestchange.ru several times, but access to the popular website was eventually restored. In March 2020, the agency added six cryptocurrency websites to its list of banned internet sources, and in June this year a court in the Perm region announced a decision to block a number of trading websites.

Lawyers from the Center for Digital Rights are currently preparing formal complaints to request the overturning of all court decisions.

“Obviously, the prosecutors did not want to accept that the law on digital assets was passed and that the legislature did not ban cryptocurrencies outright, but only restricted their use and distribution. Civil right.”
