Capital funding is the provision of money, either through debt or equity, for a company’s operations. Previously, a company’s capital structure could be determined by examining its liabilities and shareholder equity as stated on its balance sheet. However, the emergence of tokens and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) has introduced an alternative approach, where companies or organizations can issue tokens instead of relying on traditional capital funds. It is important to note that global regulators have clarified that tokens are not considered securities, which means they do not have the same rights and protections under the securities act.
There are various ways in which a company can raise capital funds, including issuing stocks, issuing debt, or issuing tokens.
