Laser eyes have become a viral sensation among Bitcoiners on Twitter. This popular meme aims to promote the rise of Bitcoin (BTC) to $100,000 and convey a positive outlook on the future of cryptocurrency. Those who embrace this meme are passionate Bitcoin enthusiasts who firmly believe in the potential of Bitcoin and have a long-term strategy of accumulating more BTC, commonly referred to as “diamond hands” and “HODL”.
Prior to its association with Bitcoin, laser eyes were commonly associated with superheroes like Superman and Homelander. Possessing laser eyes is considered a superpower that ordinary individuals do not possess. The connection between laser eyes and Bitcoin can be traced back to the emergence of the #LaserRayUntil100 hashtag in February 2021. The first user to adopt the laser eyes profile picture was @CHAIRFORCE_BTC on Twitter. Typically, the laser eyes meme features two red laser beams emanating from the user’s eyes, although variations in colors such as blue and green also exist. While most users display laser eyes on their profiles for 24 hours, some have continued to use it as their profile picture since its inception.
The laser eyes campaign has garnered support from influential figures such as Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, Tyler Winklevoss, the co-founder and CEO of Gemini crypto exchange, and Tom Brady, a star in the National Football League (NFL). Even US Senator Cynthia Lummins from Wyoming, a Bitcoin investor since 2013, changed her Twitter profile to feature laser eyes. Additionally, Nayib Bukele, the President of El Salvador, added laser eyes to his profile after the country announced its decision to adopt BTC as legal tender. Ricardo Salinas Pliego, the third wealthiest person in Mexico, has also expressed support for BTC through this meme.
