Phone Phishing

Understanding Phone Phishing

Phone phishing, also known as telephone scams or vishing (voice phishing), is a deceitful method that involves fraudulent and malicious phone calls with the intention of obtaining money or sensitive information from unsuspecting individuals. Those who engage in phone phishing scams often pretend to be trusted institutions or individuals for their own personal gain.

Typically, attackers reach out to people and present them with enticing offers such as extended warranties, services, antivirus software, charitable donations, or even free vacations. Afterwards, they ask for the victims’ credit card details and other financial information.

These hackers frequently use fear tactics and threats to manipulate individuals into giving them money. They often target vulnerable groups, including immigrants, by intimidating them with the possibility of being arrested, fined, or even deported if they do not pay taxes or a specified amount of money. Phone phishing scams may also involve urgent warning messages or ultimatums to pressure victims into immediate action.

In 2018, phone phishing scams in the United States alone resulted in losses exceeding $48 million. Unfortunately, this practice continues to increase, highlighting the importance of educating oneself about common phishing techniques in order to avoid falling victim to them in the future.
