Beijing Metro is now accepting digital yuan

China continues to expand its use of the Central Bank’s digital currency (CBDC) by introducing digital yuan payments for transportation services.

According to an official announcement on Wednesday, the Beijing Subway has launched a pilot program that will allow passengers to use the Yuan digitally, also known as e-CNY, to access 24 subway lines and four subway stations.

The new service is only available to customers with a bank account with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, a major bank participating in China’s CBDC studies. “You need to download a mobile app linked to your bank account in order to access the service,” said a spokesman for the Beijing Railway Network.

The press release notes that Beijing rail service providers will continue to promote diverse uses of the digital yuan to enhance the “new digital travel experience”.

The news comes shortly after Suzhou, a city in east China’s Jiangsu Province, began integrating an analog digital yuan on Tuesday. As Sina Finance reports, Suzhou is the first city in China to accept e-CNY payments for subways.

Beijing has become a hotbed for China’s digital yuan experiments, which are rife with e-CNY integrations and related initiatives.

By mid-June, Beijing had set up more than 3,000 yuan-based digital ATMs that allow the public to deposit and withdraw digital currencies. Previously, Beijing’s local financial regulator and regulator announced an initiative to distribute $ 6.2 million in digital yuan to the people of Beijing.
