Following reports that Valve bans crypto and NFT-related games on Steam, its main competitor, the Epic Games Store, has expressed a welcome stance towards blockchain developers and their use of cryptocurrencies in video games.
Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games speak that the Epic Games Store allows games with blockchain technology, as long as the developers comply with the relevant laws and disclose their terms. Games need to be categorized by age by an appropriate group, writes Sweeney, adding:
“Although Epic does not use cryptocurrencies in our games, we welcome innovations in technology and finance.”
Sweeney told The Verge that when it comes to using NFT in video games, Epic is willing to partner with the original developers in the area as a platform provider under some restrictions. However, he has previously made it clear that Epic Games, as the developer of the game, has no plans to do so use NFT in own productions like Fortnite.
The CEO stated that Epic will not support cryptocurrency transactions through its payment service, so developers will have to use a different payment system. The Epic Games Store has no plans either integrated Blockchain in its customers soon.
Epic Games Store, developed by the major video game publisher Epic Games, is a platform for buying and downloading video games. Launched in 2018, the platform allows users to purchase a digital version of a video game through a desktop client and then save it in a library for download and play at any time.

Sweeney’s comment follows the ban on blockchain games on Steam, a popular digital video game store. Steam’s updated guide for game developers states that video games that use blockchain technology and “exhibit or allow the exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs” are not allowed in the tech store.
Game developer SpacePirate explain that “Steam’s position is that items have value and they do not allow items of real value on their platform.”
