The email addresses of 3.1 million CoinMarketCap users were leaked last week Am i pwned?.
Have I Been Pwned says the website’s database was breached on October 12, 2021. Exactly 3,117,548 email addresses without passwords were stolen.
However, how the data leaked is still unclear.
“We found no evidence of data leaks from our own servers,” noted CoinMarketCap, adding that it will provide future updates.
The fact that the leaked data did not contain any passwords, combined with the inactivity of CoinMarketCap in exchange, means the attack is unlikely to spark any large-scale theft.
Although there is no immediate risk, this leak still affects user privacy. It can also provide resources to thieves to carry out further attacks, especially since CoinMarketCap has recognized phishing campaigns in the past.
Several other crypto companies, including Celsius, Ledger, and BitMEX, have found similar leaks in terms of email addresses and user information. Each of these leaks have happened in the past two years.
Binance cryptocurrency exchange, CoinMarketCap owners, became the target of a coordinated attack in 2019. This attack successfully stole 2% of the company’s Bitcoin holdings.
