  • The Cboe Exchange seeks to list options for several Ethereum ETFs, but this is followed by a series of delays by the SEC.

SEC Shelves Decision on Ethereum ETF Options till December

The further delay by the SEC affects a proposed rule change that would allow Cboe Exchange to list options on a number of the most-popular Ethereum ETFs, including BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust and Grayscale Ethereum Trust.

This is the latest setback in a row of delays from the SEC over crypto-related financial offerings. In September, the SEC already delayed a decision on the Nasdaq listing of options on Ethereum ETFs. That would mean that, for now, the regulator is very cautious about innovations related to digital assets.

Crypto ETF Options Await Final Approval, Trading Expected in 2025

Against the backcloth of continued delays, there have been indications of movement. On September 20, the SEC approved Nasdaq’s request to list options for BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF, the iShares Bitcoin Trust. Still, these Bitcoin options would wait further for more approvals by the CFTC and the Options Clearing Corporation before actual trading begins, likely in the first quarter of 2025.

Options for the listing of Ethereum ETFs have been viewed as a milestone for cryptocurrency markets. Jeff Park of Bitwise Invest termed the move a monumental advancement that could unlock new opportunities for investors looking to add some regulated crypto investment strategies to a portfolio.

An option is some sort of financial contract for buying or selling an asset at a predetermined price. Options have become a key component in the financial markets. If approved, Ethereum ETF options would create more complex trading strategies, boost liquidity, and add flexibility to the burgeoning crypto sector.
