“In New York we always go big, so I’m going to take my first THREE paychecks in Bitcoin when I become mayor,” Adams tweeted Thursday, ramping up his efforts to court crypto entrepreneurs.
Both Eric and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez made their announcements in response to Anthony Pompliano, a crypto investor and co-founder of Morgan Creek Digital Assets, who tweeted Tuesday, “Who will be the first American politician to accept their salary in bitcoin?”
It’s not the first time he has traded barbs with Suarez, who has staked his political career on transforming Miami into the capital of the burgeoning cryptocurrency sector.
In June, Adams retaliated against Suarez after the Miami mayor stated that New Yorkers would be better off in the Sunshine State due to lower taxes and property prices.
After a few weeks, Adams promised to make New York City the “center of Bitcoins.”
Adams went on to say that he’ll “look at what’s preventing the growth of bitcoin and cryptocurrency in our city.”
The Democrat also emphasized the importance of preparing a local workforce for jobs in the expanding industry in New York City.
“We can’t have a city where certain groups and areas thrive,” he told Bloomberg.
He went on to say that in Brooklyn, where he has served as borough president, there has been a 356 percent increase in tech startups in the last decade.
Adams also stated that he has increased the number of meetings he has with tech startups and entrepreneurs both locally and internationally.
The price of bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, has risen this year as cryptocurrencies gained popularity and were embraced by major US corporations and investors.
