Digital artist Beeple’s Discord server hacked

Popular digital artist Beeple, whose artwork has sold as NFT for a whopping $ 69 million, is launching its second auction on Nifty. But shortly before the auction day, the artist’s official Discord channel was compromised overnight. The hackers then published a fake NFT auction where the artist’s name coincides with the next auction.

An admin from the official Discord group called “Multi” confirmed the news, saying the hackers used the official Beeple Bot to announce the fake NFT drop. This happened despite 2FA authentication and one of many Discord hacks lately.

What makes the fake NFT drop even more believable is the fact that Beeple is famous for its secondary drop after the success of its first NFT sale. So many people who followed him believed it was reality. User says

“When the post appeared in the Official Beeple Discord from Verified Beeple Bot and Verified Admin with a link to the Nifty Gateway website, I didn’t blink twice. I’ll get to the top and keep throwing as much as possible. “

Hacker stole 38 ETH from Beeples Discord Group

Before the hack was blocked and announced, the hackers had piqued enough user interest to earn around 38 ETH worth $ 176,000. The admin didn’t get their hands on the account until after the fake NFT drop ad ran for an hour, which made it nearly impossible to block the wallet address as people saw these hackers take their money away. Another user wrote.

“I still don’t have a Beeple. I know Beeple stood up for the community once when we crashed Makers Place, who knows how or if he’s getting it right this time. I definitely prefer six beeps to my ETH back. “

Users who have lost money to hacking need proper communication, especially at auctions like this one. Users suggest that instead of using bots or pinned notifications, administrators should find other ways to help users differentiate between real and fake notifications.
