Topps Issues New Science Fiction-Themed NFTs

Topps, the sports and entertainment collections company, announced the release of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) based on the company’s famous science fiction-themed trading card series Mars Attacks on Monday. The limited-edition NFT collection will be stored on Curio’s NFT platform and will “mark Mars Attacks’ introduction into the blockchain.”

Topps has launched the first Mars Attacks NFT collectibles, after the introduction of digital MLB trading cards, Garbage Pail Kids collectibles, Godzilla vs. Kong blockchain assets, and Bundesliga NFTs. Topps released a set of science fiction-themed trading cards called Mars Attacks in 1962. The cards were created by Norman Saunders and Wally Wood and depict the narrative of Martians who conquer Earth, but the aliens are also governed by a despotic regime.

According to psacard.com data, the cards became immensely popular during the Cold War, and certain cards may fetch approximately $3,500 at auction. Topps’ card series became well-known in American culture, inspiring a Tim Burton film named “Mars Attacks!” in 1996. Topps has already announced the release of the first Mars Attacks NFTs through the NFT marketplace platform Curio.

According to the Mars Attacks NFT release, the NFTs will be offered in packs with varying odds each pack as well as a variety of rarities. There will be 564 “Yellow” packs that cost $49 every pack of 11 cards, 500 “Red” packs that cost $99 per pack of 25 cards, and 150 “Green” packs that cost $199 per pack and include the whole set of 55 cards.

Some of the cards will have redemption tickets that may be redeemed for animated, gold, x-ray, or static bonus cards. The total number of cards in the Mars Attacks NFT collection is 27,510, which translates to around 500 whole sets and ten redemption vouchers.

Meanwhile, Topps is facing stiff competition from other NFT collectable enterprises such as NBA Top Shot, Veve, and Autograph. Veve has joined with Disney, and the two companies have developed digital collectibles including Disney’s renowned Frozen character Elsa, Pixar’s Wall-E, Fox Entertainment’s The Simpsons, and Star Wars.
