Miami is preparing to become one of the first major US cities to monitor air quality with a decentralized Internet of Things (IoT) network built on top of Algorand.
French environmental technology company Planetwatch has developed five different types of air quality sensors. With funding from the $ 10 million PLANETS from Borderless Funds, the sensors will be deployed across the city, including in the homes of city dwellers.
Each sensor detects the concentration of air pollution in an area. Combined in a network, they help residents and city officials to analyze where the pollution is higher. The data collected by the sensors is recorded on the Algorand blockchain, which makes it tamper-proof and permanent.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has long been a proponent of blockchain technology. He said at the DeCipher event in Miami in November.
“Data from this project will play an important role in our adaptation efforts, as well as in our drive to make Miami a hub for digital capital markets.”
Residents who agree to operate a sensor in their home will be rewarded with earth tags. Planets can be sold on the open market for fiat or exchanged for earth credit. Earth credits are non-exchangeable tokens that PlanetWatch uses as the internal currency for its products and services.
