Jack Dorsey’s Spiral releases demo for the Lightning Developer Kit

Block’s crypto arm, formerly Square, has launched a demo of its Lightning Development Kit (LDK) to help speed up the Bitcoin network.

Jack Dorsey’s Spiral team released a video on December 7th showing the capabilities of Bitcoin Lightning and LDK.

LDK is designed to enable developers to seamlessly connect their applications to the network on mobile devices and point of sale terminals. It supports native APIs with the programming languages Rust, C, Swift, Java and Kotlin. This allows developers to customize their wallet application for users in the language of their choice without the need for separate LN and Bitcoin wallets.

In the video, former Twitter CEO described LDK as a program that “makes it easy for any developer in the world to build a wallet.”

Video shows a Jack Dorsey doll interacting with store employees and owners by paying for services over the Lightning Network (LN). He uses the LN wallet app on his mobile device to pay for a nose piercing and buy movie tickets while the video goes to the Spiral team talking about the value of Bitcoin and LN.

Spiral, formerly Square Crypto, has been developing Bitcoin wallet solutions since it was founded in 2019. In addition to LDK, Spiral is working on a Bitcoin Development Kit that enables multiportable mobile wallet interactions.

Lightning is a Layer 2 scaling solution for Bitcoin which, according to Spiral Project Manager Haley Berkoe, “turns Bitcoin into a de facto payment system”.

Product release comes at a random time for Lightning users as network nodes are at all-time highs. Bitcoin Visual shows that there are 18,905 nodes with active channels in the Lightning Network.

Over the past 3 months, the total number of nodes has increased by 23%, with 3,534 new nodes added. LN currently has a network capacity of 3,285 BTC, or about $ 166 million in 1 ML.
