A video clip that went viral on Twitter on Friday initially left many wondering who and where is destroying such a large number of Bitcoin mining devices. The incident quickly became known and occurred in Malaysia.

A video showing a car crushing hundreds of Bitcoin ASICs on the floor began circulating in the Chinese crypto community on WeChat on Friday morning local time. Initially, some speculated that it happened in China or Latin America as the background of the video, making it difficult to say exactly where it is.

But according to a report by the Malaysian media company The Star, police in the city of Miri, in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, brought down a total of 1,069 Bitcoin miners who were recently arrested while stealing electricity.

During a joint action by the police and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) in Miri, a Malaysian city on the northwest coast of the island of Borneo, mining machines were confiscated from February to April. Their value is estimated at 5.3 million Malaysian ringgits ($ 1.26 million). All judicial recoveries were dealt with at the Miri District Police Department on Friday.

AKP Police Chief Hakemal Hawari in Miri said they had arrested eight people in connection with illegal mining activities. He said six of the eight people were charged with criminals and detained.

“A total of six people were successfully charged with electricity theft under Section 379 of the Criminal Code and fined up to RM8,000 and imprisonment for up to eight months.

Authorities say the subjects used mining machines powered by stolen electricity from SEB’s power lines to mine bitcoins.

And the consequences are calculated, according to the sheriff, SEB has suffered 8.4 million Malaysian ringgit losses due to electricity theft from these illegal mining operations. He continued:

“The theft of electricity for Bitcoin mining operations resulted in frequent power outages and in 2021 three houses were razed to the ground due to illegal power connections.”

Bitcoin mining is increasingly attracting the attention of regulators, especially illegal mining farms.

As reported by U.Today, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) also blew up an illegal bitcoin mining farm last week with 3,800 PlayStation 4 consoles which, along with a variety of GPUs and CPUs, are used to mine cryptocurrencies. The operation stole US $ 256,500 a week from a power distributor in Vinnytsia, causing blackouts in several parts of the city.

Such cases are quite common, but illegal mining can take place even in some top secret locations. In early 2018, a Russian nuclear scientist was arrested for cryptocurrency mining in a warhead facility.
