A Reddit user named Nwa1g posted as post claims to have found a scammer on Instagram posing as Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
This person or group is accused of “enticing followers to classic crypto scams”.
The Redditor wrote about a “very dangerous disgusting scam” and asked the Ethereum community to support its contribution to address the problem.
According to him, Vitalik Buterin does not have an official account on Instagram, and so the alleged fraudster is exploiting it by using Vitalik’s Twitter account name @ importantik.eth. This account has 643,000 followers.
Nwa1g also wrote that it is not possible to report a scammer because there is no official Buterin account on this social media platform. However, there is an @buterin_official account on Instagram with 576,000 followers.
The Redditor claimed the fake account in question was from Israel and posted “harmless sponsorship ads with Vitalik’s image”. Curiously, he said that the fake account on Instagram had been around for more than two years – since 2019.
According to Nwa1g, the people behind the scam account ask their followers to send them direct messages (believing they are writing to Vitalik Buterin themselves) and then they become victims of the scam These scammers expect you to get 3 times your money back. The user also received malicious links from this account in the DM.
However, a simple search on Instagram reveals that there are more than ten “Vitalik Buterin” Instagram accounts with a number of accounts known as “Vitalik Biterin_official”.
