China has attacked three Republican senators who have asked the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic committees to prevent U.S. athletes from using the central bank’s alleged digital yuan (CBDC). Quoc hopes to celebrate its world premiere in Beijing in winter 2022.
Three US senators have signed a letter calling on Olympic officials to ban US athletes from using the digital yuan during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
In a letter Monday to U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee President Susanne Lyons, Republican Senators Marsha Blackburn, Roger Wicker, and Cynthia Lummis urged officials to stop U.S. athletes from using or restricting the digital yuan accept, claiming that he could be “tracked and tracked” by the People’s Bank of China (PBoC). All three claim that the Chinese Communist Party can use the digital currency to interview visiting athletes and when they get into the USA return.
The senators said the Chinese government recently introduced new features for the digital yuan that allow officials “to know exactly what someone has bought and where.” They cite the WeChat messaging and payment app as a precedent, claiming the platform was “used to track, intimidate and arrest Chinese citizens.”
Lummis, Blackburn, and Wicker asked the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation for a briefing on the matter within 30 days. They called on the Olympic Committee to work with federal agencies “to protect the privacy of American athletes from the Chinese communist government.”
In their letter, they wrote that “the digital yuan can be used to interview Chinese citizens and Chinese visitors on an unprecedented scale in the hope that they will keep a digital yuan wallet on their smartphone and use it when they return continue to use.”
However, according to an official statement posted on the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s website, Spokesman Zhao Lijian expressed anger at the senators when he was questioned by Reuters during a press conference on the matter. Zhao claimed that the letter “only reflects the ignorance of politicians”.
He added a recommendation that senators should take the time to “learn what digital currency really is.”
Zhao claims the US is “setting the global standard” on “espionage and digital security threats.” He explained:
“The United States persecutes not only its competitors but also its allies through various means such as data theft and wiretapping. Everyone knows that these facts are true. “
“The digital currency is an inevitable product of the development of digital technology and corresponds to the current global development trend of the digital economy. The Chinese law also provides clear provisions to ensure the principles of data security, ”the spokesman continued.
And Zhao concluded that “American politicians should respect the spirit of the Olympic Charter, stop politicizing the sport and stop talking about China’s upcoming digital currency.”
China started testing its digital yuan in April 2020, giving away thousands of dollars in central bank digital currency, or CBDC, to people in other cities. The PBoC also said it is looking at ways for foreign athletes and visitors to use CBDCs during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, which is believed to be the first such test by foreign nationals in China.
Although the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics have been postponed for a year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Beijing is said to be still on track to prepare for the Winter Games, which are set to start in February 2022, consistently less than since March 2020 200 new domestic COVID-19 cases reported, but some reports suggest the government is responsible for a pandemic disinformation campaign.
