China wants US senators to “stop causing trouble for the digital yuan. close”

Just before the Olympic flame goes out at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the heat is rising among US lawmakers and Chinese officials.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Chinese State Department spokesman Zhao Lijian referred to the letter of warning sent by US senators to the US Olympic and Paralympic Committees regarding the use of the copper digital yuan in the Olympic Games next year.

Lijian urged US politicians to “obey the spirit of the Olympic Charter,” and urged them to “stop making sport a political issue and not cause problems for digital currencies in China,” the South China Morning Post news.

Lijian claims recent actions have shown a lack of understanding, suggesting that US lawmakers are “figuring out what a digital currency really is.”

Earlier this week, Republican Senators Marsha Blackburn, Roger Wicker, and Cynthia Lummis wrote a letter Susanne Lyons, President of the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee. Alleging that the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) will “track and trace” the digital yuan, three officials are calling for US athletes to be banned from using or accepting China’s digital currency.

The Senators reaffirm that the Communist Party of China can use digital currency to monitor athletes returning to the United States, saying that the new digital yuan feature will allow Chinese officials to “know in detail and exactly what someone bought where ”.

In the letter, all three requested a meeting of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation within 30 days on the matter.

China, on the other hand, sees the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing scheduled for next year as the first test for foreigners to use China’s digital central bank currency. At the Boao Forum for Asia in April, PBoC Lieutenant Governor Li Bo said:

“For the upcoming Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, we are committed to making e-CNY available not only for domestic users, but also for international athletes and visitors.”
