A hacker from the group hacking Twitter for the infamous 2020 Bitcoin scam is arrested in Spain

The 22-year-old British hacker Joseph James O’Connor has arrested in Spain yesterday in connection with the hack of politicians and celebrities Twitter accounts in July 2020.

The attack on Twitter accounts in July 2020 affected many celebrities, including US President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, reality TV star Kim Kardashian, singer Kayne West, billionaires Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Elon Musk, Michael Bloomberg and many others were also attacked. All the hacked accounts simultaneously published Bitcoin giveaway scam content.

The hack forced Twitter to temporarily disable some features, which allowed many accounts to tweet for several hours before security was restored. After reviewing the hack, Twitter found that some employees had been tricked into accidentally giving hackers access to the website’s internal systems.

The FBI and Justice Department later organized an investigation and found that an 18-year-old man, Graham Ivan Clark of Florida, was the mastermind behind the hack. Clark is serving a three-year prison sentence and three years probation after being found guilty in early March this year. Two of Clark’s accomplices, Nima Fazeli and Mason Sheppard, are responsible for finding buyers for these Twitter accounts. Both Fazeli and Sheppard were charged in the case.

A third accomplice, O’Connor, faces several other charges. In addition to being charged with illegally accessing computers and taking over multiple TikTok and Snapchat accounts, he is also accused of stealing cyber information from a 16-year-old man.

O’Connor’s role in the attack was also made clear when the FBI interviewed the masterminds and accomplices. In it, O’Connor was the one who announced that he had been given access to certain Twitter accounts, including the account of former President Donald Trump, who was then the current President.

Investigators in California have received warnings about O’Connor since 2018. He was also involved in several SIM swapping attacks. Witnesses heard O’Connor’s voice and helped law enforcement agencies identify him.

A Justice Department spokesman said O’Connor would be heard about his detention in Spain.
