CityDAO, the experiment in decentralized land ownership, fell victim to a $95,000 hack. According to the group’s Twitter account, the attacker was chop one of the admin accounts of the project on Discord.
CityDAO founders bought 40 acres of land in Wyoming in November with the intention of building a “blockchain city”.
The goal of the project is to build a city with decentralized governance where “citizens” buy land in the form of NFTs. CityDAO uses Discord to issue a “land drop” alert when there is an opportunity to purchase the above NFTs.
The attacker issued a fake drop from the admin’s hacked account, pocketing 29.67 ETH ($95,000) in the process.
The affected administrator “Lyons800” later tweeted that the attack was “a ridiculous security breach by Discord”.
This is Discord’s second major hack in less than a month. On December 21, Justin Kan’s NFT platform, Fractal, was compromised, with an attacker taking over the project’s account to issue a phishing link to users promoting a new NFT, causing approximately $150,000 in damage means.
